Word Work

Throughout the week our schedule switches between reading workshop and word work. This morning was word work. During word work friends transition between four stations that currently are focusing on the letters and sounds of the alphabet. The first station involved friends solving puzzles and then putting them in alphabetical order. The second station, with Mrs. Keller, had friends identifying a lowercase letter, making the sound of the letter and then finding the uppercase version on the sun rug.

The third station today was reading, with Mrs. Bahr, out of our book boxes. The fourth station, with me, was focusing on introducing a new lowercase letter - i.

Above our classroom library are all of the other letters I have introduced so far... b, f, t, m and n. You may hear friends say the letter name, then the name of the picture and then the sound for example.
b - bat - /b/  or i - itch - /i/  or f - fun - /f/
We do this to help friends remember and associate the letter and sound with an image.

You may also hear friends talk about the different lines on the page. First there is the sky line, then the plane line, next is the grass line and finally (my favorite) is the worm line. Naming the lines helps friends learn how to write the letters with fluency.

Hope you are enjoying this gorgeous sunny day!

I wish you well!
Love,

Day TWO!

Day two is truly wonderful! We have so much fun together! Today we started working on our first classroom book and WOW it's going to be AMAZING! So many beautiful illustrators and creative thinkers in this class. Also today we completed our first of many Math and Writing rotations. It's been a busy busy busy day! Now to the fun stuff. It's always said that pictures speak much louder than words and I agree 100%. So here are the pictures from our magnificent day TWO! Right after lunch we went outside to explore our school garden with Nurse Amy! We picked marigold seeds which we are going to plant in our classroom! Check out all the fun we had!  It was a busy day indeed, but so much fun! I can't wait for tomorrow! Love, Miss Brehm

Sunshine Chair

This is our Sunshine Chair! It is a very special place in our classroom where friends can go to relax, regroup, think and feel safe. In our classroom anyone can go and sit in the sunshine chair any time they want. Friends also may be invited to sit in the sunshine chair. While sitting in the chair friends are able to watch Zogika and calm their minds. It is not just for students! I myself have used the chair once or twice when I am feeling frustrated, sad or if I just need some space. I do this to model the expectations for how to use the sunshine chair, to identify feelings and to help friends self regulate. Also so friends know that it is not a time out chair or take a break chair.  Feel free to stop by anytime and check out this amazing space in our classroom! Love, Miss Brehm

Happy News!

Hello! I wanted to share with everyone that I have been accepted into Oxford University's MSc in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition beginning in the fall of 2017. I received my offer this morning during our delayed opening. Some friends overheard my excitement and I explained to them that I am going back to school this fall to become a better teacher. I reassured them that I am not going anywhere right now, will see them off to first grade and will be back. Thank you for your continued support and I am excited to finish a great year together!
