Mathematicians

As a class we have started to solve addition word problems and discuss the three most important things to have when solving a word problem. Those three things are a number sentence, labels and a picture to show their thinking.

Throughout Math Workshop we have been solving problems together and each mathematician has a chance to solve a problem on their own. We take turns explaining our thinking and examining other mathematicians work to see similarities and differences!

Above you can see how we solved this one problem together. Making sure that the number sentence is labeled using the first letter of the word to identify what it is, also making sure at the sum to write out the full label and finally circle the answer.   5b+3b=8balls

As a group we also discussed the importance of how to draw the picture to show our work. The picture is an important part so that the reader can follow the mathematician's thinking. Our mathematicians use dice a lot and talked about how we can use dice patterns to share our thinking. Making sure that our drawing is also labeled appropriately.

It is amazing to see everyone's thought process and the way each friend supports each other throughout the whole process!

I hope you are enjoying the snow!
Love,
Miss Brehm

Day TWO!

Day two is truly wonderful! We have so much fun together! Today we started working on our first classroom book and WOW it's going to be AMAZING! So many beautiful illustrators and creative thinkers in this class. Also today we completed our first of many Math and Writing rotations. It's been a busy busy busy day! Now to the fun stuff. It's always said that pictures speak much louder than words and I agree 100%. So here are the pictures from our magnificent day TWO! Right after lunch we went outside to explore our school garden with Nurse Amy! We picked marigold seeds which we are going to plant in our classroom! Check out all the fun we had!  It was a busy day indeed, but so much fun! I can't wait for tomorrow! Love, Miss Brehm

In honor of my momma, Katrina Brehm, I am running a marathon. Crazy, I know. I got it from her. In Mom’s memory, my goal is to raise enough money to send a child to @camptakumta ! Please take a moment to check out the link in my bio and if you’re able to, give any amount. Thank you ☀️

Sunshine Chair

This is our Sunshine Chair! It is a very special place in our classroom where friends can go to relax, regroup, think and feel safe. In our classroom anyone can go and sit in the sunshine chair any time they want. Friends also may be invited to sit in the sunshine chair. While sitting in the chair friends are able to watch Zogika and calm their minds. It is not just for students! I myself have used the chair once or twice when I am feeling frustrated, sad or if I just need some space. I do this to model the expectations for how to use the sunshine chair, to identify feelings and to help friends self regulate. Also so friends know that it is not a time out chair or take a break chair.  Feel free to stop by anytime and check out this amazing space in our classroom! Love, Miss Brehm
